Vaikom Municipality Ward Delimitation (2025)
The Delimitation Commission, Kerala, through its final order dated 26 May 2025, reorganized and demarcated the electoral wards of the Vaikom Municipality in Kottayam District. The municipality has been divided into 27 wards for local body elections, with ward boundaries defined based on geographical features, roads, canals, water bodies, settlements, and administrative boundaries. The reorganization aims to ensure balanced representation by maintaining relatively uniform population distribution among wards while preserving local community identities and administrative convenience.
The newly constituted wards cover the entire municipal area, extending from the northern boundary adjoining Udayanapuram Panchayat to the southern and western regions bordering Vembanad Lake and T.V.Puram Panchayat. Major residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial areas have been distributed among wards such as Karayil, Udayanapuram, Karuvalli, Perinchila, Chalapparambu, Industrial Ward, Link Road, Fire Station Ward, Municipal Office Ward, Vaikom Town, Taluk Hospital Ward, EVR Ward, and Polassery Ward. The ward map indicates a balanced spatial distribution of urban, semi-urban, waterfront, and agricultural settlements across the municipality.
Population allocation across the 27 wards ranges approximately between 788 and 943 persons per ward, ensuring equitable electoral representation. The largest ward by population is Jawahar Ward (943), followed by Udayanapuram (935) and Thuruthikkara (923), while the smallest populations are found in Aiyerkulangara (788) and Kavarappadi (788). Central wards such as Vaikom Town, Taluk Hospital, Municipal Office, and EVR Ward encompass the municipality's commercial and administrative core, whereas peripheral wards such as Kayippuram, Kovilakathumkadavu, Thuruthikkara, and Polassery include significant waterfront and rural-transition areas. Overall, the delimitation provides a geographically coherent and demographically balanced framework for municipal governance, service delivery, and democratic representation within Vaikom Municipality.
